Portland, OR — Educator Caitlyn Whitcomb will bring the magic of edible science to Rocky Butte Farmers Market (RBFM) this weekend.

On Saturday, July 13, children who visit the RBFM Kids Patch will learn how to transform easy-to-find ingredients into delicious hydrating elixirs--no fancy tools or appliances required! They will leave the market with a custom blend of herbs and flowers to turn into a simple solar-infusion commonly known as "sun tea." Early birds have the best chance of getting a $5 kids token to spend in the market.

Each week, Whitcomb, a community-based educator with roots in the neighborhood, shares her love of learning and
passion for horticulture and food science with children and families who visit the weekly Saturday market in Northeast Portland.

RBFM is Portland’s dog & kid friendly neighborhood market with a block party vibe. This year, the market is bigger and better than ever at its more visible location near Glenhaven Park at NE Siskiyou between 80th and 81st streets.

Whitcomb was born and raised in neighborhoods that are now served by the Rocky Butte Farmers Market and is now an education professional bringing up the next generations.

“When I'm not in the Kids Patch, I'm never far away because I live and work from my childhood home in the Russell neighborhood," she says. "Now, I call that house The Morris Street Learning Garden. I transformed the property into a school-age childcare facility, and I spend my days cultivating a sense of place and interdependence among the next generation of local kids.”

The July 13 market also features entertainment by Flamenco guitarist Jeff Trapp (@trapper_the_tripper) from 10 AM to Noon. Born and raised in Silverton, Oregon, Jeff Trapp is a disciple of the guitar. He has recorded and performed as a professional musician for more than three decades. As a Rock n’ Roller he toured, worked and recorded with bands such as: Everclear, King Black Acid, The Stamen Pistils, Chris Tsefalas and many more. While touring with Everclear in the early 2000’s Jeff performed on both Late Night with Conan O’ Brien and on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

RBFM proudly accepts Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) and offers Double Up Food Bucks through a partnership with the Farmers Market Fund.

Community educator brings passion for learning to Rocky Butte Farmers Market (Photo) - 06/28/24

Portland, OR — Educator Caitlyn Whitcomb brings a wealth of knowledge and spirit of fun to the Rocky Butte
Farmers Market (RBFM) Children’s Programming.

Each week, the community-based educator with roots in the neighborhood shares her love of learning and
passion for horticulture and food science with children and families who visit the weekly
Saturday market in Northeast Portland.

RBFM is Portland’s dog & kid friendly neighborhood market with a block party vibe.
On Saturday, June 29, Whitcomb will offer taste testing activities with samples of fruits and
vegetables from market vendors.

“I love putting together hands-on activities for kids to enjoy at the market. This summer, I am
looking forward to collaborating with some of our awesome vendors to give kids a special
behind-the-scenes look at how products get to each booth,” she says. “I've got a mushroom-centered activity in the works, a project about microgreens, and of course, monthly taste-tests so kids (and adults) can try more of the amazing produce that our local growers bring to market.”

This year’s new location is a big plus, Whitcomb says.

The market moved to a more visible location this year at NE Siskiyou between 80th and 81st streets.

“I am so excited about our new location!” says Whitcomb. “While I adored the amenities that
Manna House so generously shared with us, I think being visible from 82nd Ave. and so much
closer to TriMet routes will ensure even more community members get to enjoy everything that
this market has to offer.”

Whitcomb was born and raised in neighborhoods that are now served by the Rocky Butte
Farmers Market and is now an education professional bringing up the next generations.

sense of place and interdependence among the next generation of local kids.”

The June 29 market also features entertainment by alternative folk/rock artist Nicholas James.
