In the United States there are over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed yearly, but with early detection and effective treatment, mortality from this disease can be significantly reduced. The American Cancer Society acknowledges October as a month to bring awareness to the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, and Skamania County's EMTs and Paramedics are showing their support by changing their uniforms to pink. The pink ribbon is a universal symbol for the awareness and support of breast cancer survivors, research, and early detection and is worn by our members as a reminder to all women to perform regular breast self-checks and schedule clinical breast exams and mammograms as needed.
Employees also gave a sizable donation to the charity National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) through the organizations labor group, International Association of Firefighters Local 4574. The NBCF donation will go to providing women with access to free breast health services and to programs that treat and support woman as they face the difficult diagnosis of breast cancer. NBCF received the highest national rating from Charity Navigator with 85% of the revenue going directly towards their innovative programs. For more information on NBCF visit nationalbreastcancer.org
