Press Release - Electrical Fire Event at Estacada School District

ESTACADA, Or.— April 4, 2019

On April 4th at approximately 9:00 a.m., a downed power line caused a small
fire outside of Estacada High School. Students were kept inside and placed on
level one lockout status to ensure that students did not come in contact with the
line. No one was hurt during this event. The line caused system failures that
impacted electricity and phone lines district-wide.

Estacada Fire and Portland General Electric responded to the scene quickly.
From there, firefighters and staff worked quickly to ensure that the inside of
Estacada High School was safe. Ultimately, it was determined that while
Estacada High School had no internal fire concerns, an early departure was
necessary to allow crews to work on and assess the building.

Estacada High School students were transported home at 11:15 a.m. All other
buildings continued normal operations. River Mill Elementary was without power
for portions of the day, and other schools experienced internet and phone
outages that were restored by 2:00. All students were provided with food and a
quality educational experience during these times.

District staff and industry professionals are still assessing damages at Estacada
High School that stemmed from this event, but schools will be open on April
5th, and the buildings are safe. The cause is thought to have stemmed from a
faulty P.G.E. powerline, and the district and P.G.E. will continue to work
together.

The district would like to thank district partners and families for their attention,
diligence, and cooperation during this unexpected event. Student safety is a top
priority that was maintained at all times during this process. Estacada Fire
credits the swift response to this incident to the district's extensive emergency
planning and protocols.
