News Release
Local School Districts to Hold Kindercamps this Summer - 07/31/17

For the second year, the NW Early Learning Hub (NW ELH) is pleased to fund an exciting opportunity for local school districts. The Hub funded "Kindercamp" in all schools who applied across Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook counties.

The Kindercamps are summer experiences of 10 days, prior to the start of the school year. The camps help incoming kindergartners get a jump on kindergarten by learning how to line up, where the restrooms are, what the rules are on the playground and more.

Partnering with nine school districts, 250 incoming kindergarten students received a one-to-two week camp last summer to get a head start on learning school routines, continuing to develop writing, reading, and math skills, and getting to know the school and its staff. The camps also offered an opportunity for 125 parents and caretakers to connect with the school through parent sessions, kinder-ready workshops, and camp graduation celebrations.

Teachers reported that they could see a big difference in the students who had attended Kindercamp and that the experience allowed them to get right into teaching. One teacher said that she felt that Kindercamp saved her three weeks of instructional time.

Parents of incoming kindergarteners are encouraged to check with their school to find out how to apply. See the attached for a list of participating schools and Kindercamp dates.

The Northwest Early Learning Hub is working to ensure that young children and their families in Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook counties have the resources and support to thrive. We are educators, health care providers, community advocates, program providers and businesses who believe we can do more for our communities together than we can on our own.

NW Regional Education Service District is the backbone agency of the NWEL Hub, which has been in existence since May 2015. The NWEL Hub also partners with local agencies to sponsor preschool promise, parenting classes, and health & education screening events across the region.
