Oregon High School Career Technical Education Teacher Pathway Grant to Impact Lane County Teachers - 10/30/17

The Oregon High School Career Technical Education (CTE) Teacher Pathway federal grant has been awarded to Portland Community College. This grant is designed to increase recruitment and retention of skilled high school Career Technical Educators in Lane County.

This grant is a partnership between Lane Education Service District and Portland Community College (PCC). Lane Education Service District and PCC will develop and implement two models for high school CTE teacher recruitment, preparation, induction, and retention.

Career Technical Education prepares students for employment, college, apprenticeship, and next steps beyond High School. A combination of remote and face-to-face instruction will be provided to participating teachers.

Model 1 will recruit business and industry professionals possessing required industry work experience and/or industry certification to become CTE teachers. Industry participants will complete an intensive 15-month, cohort-based program anchored by two Summer Institutes.

Model 2 will recruit licensed teachers in non-CTE areas (such as math, science, social studies) who desire a CTE endorsement. Participants will complete work experiences, coordinated according to each participant's CTE 3-year Professional Development Plan.

Mentoring has shown to be a successful strategy for new educators but is seldom applied specifically to support Career Technical Educators. This grant provides a strong mentoring strategy. Individual mentoring, training, and support will be coordinated by a Lane Education Service District's CTE Mentor Team. A key curriculum for mentor training is the Research For Better Teaching's Studying Skillful Teaching. Studying Skillful Teaching will be taught by Lane Education Service District. Trained CTE mentors are an important component of both models and for teacher retention.
