Portland, OR: New Avenues for Youth is thrilled to welcome The Living Room into its family of programs, expanding services for youth identifying as LGBTQIA2s+ into Clackamas County. For many years New Avenues has offered services to the LGBTQIA2s+ Community within the Sexual & Gender Minority Resource Center (SMYRC), through culturally specific positions throughout its programs to support LGBTQIA2s+ youth, and the Bridge 13 Community Education Program, which supports organizations, corporations, and schools with LGBTQIA2s+ equity workshops to better serve the LGBTQIA2s+ community.

For more than 10 years, The Living Room has supported and celebrated young people identifying as LGBTQIA2s+, ages 14-20, in Clackamas County through youth-led programs and services rooted in youth-adult partnership. This program will continue to offer accessible programming and resources that encourage personal growth, a sense of belonging, and the development of leadership skills among LGBTQIA2s+ youth and their allies.  Being a part of New Avenues will ensure continued and deepened impact for The Living Room’s programs, youth support, and resources.

LGBTQIA2s+ youth are over-represented in populations of youth experiencing homelessness and housing instability. We know firsthand that harassment, discrimination, and other forms of victimization that LGBTQIA2s+ experience commonly lead to adverse long-term impacts on their education and future success, safety, mental health, and well-being.  By investing in LGBTQIA2s+ youth programs, New Avenues hopes to both engage youth in early interventions and meet youth in moments of need in spaces that are most supportive and comfortable for them.

This partnership will significantly increase culturally specific services for LGBTQIA2s+ youth offered by New Avenues, expand the safety net for LGBTQIA2s+ youth in Multnomah and Clackamas counties, and deepen our shared service impact. It’s also a significant addition to New Avenues’ youth homelessness prevention programming, as well as our geographic expansion in recent years to high-need communities in the region!
