Russell Hornsby to Host Portland Children's Museum Gala - 01/17/19

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Children’s Museum is delighted to welcome Russell Hornsby as its Celebrity Master of Ceremonies at its new signature event, Fancy Pants Ball. The Ball will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 6–10:30 p.m. at Ecotrust’s Irving Street Studio. Portlanders will remember Russell as hard-nosed detective Hank Griffin on NBC’s Grimm. More recently, he’s starred opposite Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in Fences and Michael B. Jordan in Creed II. Currently, Russell can be seen in the critically-acclaimed film The Hate U Give as well as in the new Netflix series, Seven Seconds. Having spent years in Portland shooting Grimm, Russell is elated to be back in town to emcee the Fancy Pants Ball and to stop off for a visit to Portland Children’s Museum with his two young sons.

At Fancy Pants Ball, Russell will guide guests in activities and programming that demonstrate and celebrate all of the ways in which the Museum gives children a voice, preparing them to become our next generation of innovative problem-solvers.

Some levels of sponsorship include a VIP Meet and Greet with Russell Hornsby. Please see https://www.portlandcm.org/fancypants2019 to join as a sponsor or a guest.

Portland Children's Museum Hosts Second Grown-ups' Night Out - 01/14/19

Portland Children’s Museum Hosts Second Grown-ups’ Night Out

Portland Children’s Museum Continues New Event

PORTLAND, Ore. –Portland Children’s Museum is hosting its second Grown-ups’ Night Out event on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 7–10 p.m.

The Grown-ups’ Night Out event gives adults the opportunity to reconnect with their own childhood while playing and partying in the Museum without children. The event is held twice yearly with a theme of breaking at least one rule party-goers had as a child. While the rule to break will change, the event will always have dessert before dinner, as well as an opportunity for social good.

Following on the heels of a very successful Play with your Food edition of the event in the fall, the theme of this second event is Climb on the Furniture. Guests will participate in activities such as Jumping on the Bed, Swivel Chair Racing, and Fort Construction and can relax in the Mattress Lounge area. During this night’s event, learn how to reduce the amount of salvageable materials, including furniture, that end up in landfills with ReClaim It! and Community Warehouse.

A complimentary adult beverage is included with admission along with dessert from Pie Spot and DB Dessert Company. Additional drinks available for purchase. In addition, The Counter @ the Museum will be serving a special menu for guests to purchase additional food.

Portland Children's Museum and The Living School of Art Open New Exhibition - 01/09/19

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Children’s Museum is excited to collaborate with The Living School of Art to host an art exhibition opening on Friday, January 18, 2019, from 5–6:30 p.m. The exhibition at the Museum includes individual artworks made by members of the The Living School of Art and artwork made in collaboration with artists Jodie Cavalier, Amanda Leigh Evans, Laura Medina, Victor Maldonado, and Eunice Tapia. Pieces include paintings and drawings that tell personal stories of migration, an installation of life-sized jellyfish made from recycled materials, and participatory artworks. In addition, there will be concurrent programming related to the gallery led by artist Eunice Tapia and young creators from The Living School of Art.

“The Living School of Art is a project that empowers young people as artists and storytellers, and recognizes the creative practices that are already part of our daily lives. Art is not something separate from ourselves, it's not something we have to visit a museum in downtown to experience. It's right here in our homes, in our kitchens, in our community too. We center around the traditions and creative practices in each of our cultures, and speak about them with the same artistic respect and value that is placed on contemporary art. Our exhibition at Portland Children's Museum includes some of the work we have been doing together over the past three years.”

-Amanda Leigh Evans, artist, educator and craftsperson

After the 5–6:30 p.m. opening on January 18, The Living School of Art exhibition will be open every day from January 19, 2019, to May 31, 2019, from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

About The Living School of Art

The Living School of Art (LSA) is a living art project co-led by neighbors in a city-block square affordable apartment complex in East Portland, OR. As neighbors, we are both students and teachers in this project we are shaping through our life together. LSA centers around the creative actions each of us has developed through personal experiences or ancestral traditions, and seeks a collective art practice that honors each neighbor’s story. The art we live and teach together includes maintenance, cooking, domestic crafts, dancing, gardening, storytelling, and art-making.

The Living School of Art follows the form of a traditional art school, but the context and roles are shifted, and any neighbor of any age can lead within the school. The program includes rotating exhibitions in eight laundry rooms, an artist residency program, visiting artist workshops, a collectively led women’s art group, a youth art program, site-specific artworks, and a community garden.
