Silverton Fire Explorers Help Out with Active Shooter Class (Photo) - 03/19/18

On Thursday, March 15, 23 members of the Silverton High School Protective Services Class and Silverton Fire District Explorer Post 400, participated in the Clackamas Fire District Active Shooter Drill. "In this particular training scenario, which takes place at Concord Elementary in Milwaukie (a school building no longer being used by the school district), firefighters and police officers respond to a call for shots fired at the school. Law enforcement officers secure the scene and neutralize the threat while Clackamas Firefighter/Paramedics work with them to quickly remove injured victims and provide critical, life-saving care immediately. The scenario-based training was aimed at improving coordinated responses to active shooter incidents."

The Protective Services Class is in its first year at Silverton. The class ranges from Freshman to Seniors. In the class students get to learn from subject matter specific instructors within the Fire, EMS and Law Enforcement fields. Several of the students have joined the Fire Explorer Program as well as the Law Enforcement Cadet Program because of this class.

The Explorer Program is in its 7th year with the Fire District. Currently there are 19 members in the Program ranging from 14 to 19 years of age. Most of these members have plans to become future volunteer or career firefighters.

"Training like this is incredibly valuable as it gives firefighters and police officers an opportunity to work together in a learning environment." This was the final day of the Active Shooter training for Clackamas Fire District.
